The Ornithology Collection
I would like to tell you a bit about why I chose to create #TheOrnithologyCollection and why I focused on Hummingbirds.
I will be entirely honest with you, I did consider not creating any more collections in 2020!! It has been quite a year and I had already taken on a fair few commissions and I wasn’t sure I needed the extra pressure of a collection release too. I had this idea though, an idea that was nagging away at the back of my mind.
It was too beautiful to be ignored
The collection was originally going to include various different species of birds. The clue is in the name, as Ornithology is the scientific study of birds. However, the more I thought on it the more I realised this collection needed to be hummingbirds.
If I was really going to pull off this collections it needed to be a subject I would find irresistible. And who can resist the stunning colours of these beautiful birds??! (I decided to keep the name though!) I also knew the hummingbird was the prefect subject to end 2020 with. Not just because of their colours, but because of what they symbolise and what they make us feel.
In some cultures the hummingbird is thought to bring joy, love and luck to those who are lucky enough to see them. After the year we have had I thought we could all use a bit more luck, joy and love in our lives!
As I painted these birds I saw them as light in the darkness. Their colours blazing, bringing joy and lifting the heavy weight of 2020 from our shoulders. A spark of hope in a hazy world.
Spreading our wings, stretching them wide after a long period of restlessness and restrictions.
Are you ready to welcome a bit more light into your world?
